ROXBURY - The township is installing small, wireless video cameras at Horseshoe Lake to combat nuisance vandalism.
Township parks and recreation director Dave Stierli said the New York-based company Instantstream soon will place the devices in areas that have been affected by minor vandalism. They include a concession stand that once had its windows broken, and a pavilion at Veterans Memorial Park, where flags were stolen.
"It's not a persistent problem," township manager Chris Raths said Tuesday. "From time to time, there's some mischief going on over there."
Stierli said the video feed can either be transmitted to the police station or to individual patrol cars. He said the township is working out how that arrangement might work with the police department.
Mayor Tim Smith said the township connected with Instantstream because it wanted to test some new wireless equipment, and Roxbury offered to try it at Horseshoe Lake.
"Horseshoe Lake has had a continuing problem with vandalism around the concession stand," Smith said. He added that some lighting at Veterans Memorial Park also was damaged.
"With some nuisance vandalism continually going on, we felt it was time to try something to proactively try to keep people from doing these things," Smith said. "In the event that we can't deter them, we may perhaps be able to catch them."
Attempts to reach Instantstream were unsuccessful on Tuesday.
Stierli said he didn't know the exact number of cameras, but said at least three would be placed in problem areas. He said the concession stand near the baseball field not only had broken windows, but someone also had damaged the interior of a bathroom.
Stierli said the cameras are tiny and have a five-mile range. If the Horseshoe Lake experiment is successful, the township might consider using them at other parks.
